ASUCD Student Labor Survey

Fall 2021

The goal of the project was to give a voice to the student workers on campus and provide an opportunity for them to share their working conditions and experiences. The committee aimed to find a relationship between involvement and payment.

During the Quarterly Town Hall for the Fall 2021 Quarter, the Senate Table was asked if anyone knew the number of unpaid volunteers within the ASUCD Student Government. No member was able to answer the question. To address the deficiency in data around volunteers in ASUCD, the Research and Data Committee began working on a multiple-quarter-long project, the ASUCD Student Labor Project, focusing on Student Government volunteers in particular for the Fall
2021 Quarter. The main points of the report are:

  • A large majority of the positions required by the ASUCD Bylaws are currently unpaid and therefore volunteers are crucial for compliance with the Bylaws.
  • There are currently no accurate records on the number of volunteers working in Student Government or ASUCD as a whole.
  • Student Government volunteers contribute large amounts of time into ASUCD (an average of 4.5 hours per week) with many also holding down an additional paid job (with the average weekly commitment to said job between about 10.4 hours per volunteer).

The committee strongly recommended that the Association (1) significantly improve internal tracking of the number and hours of volunteers and (2) look into the financial cost of paying some or all of the volunteer positions in ASUCD.
