EPPC Environmental Justice Survey
Fall 2022
Lead: Jahanvi Narwal
Requested by the Environmental Planning and Policy Commission (EPPC), the survey sought to gauge awareness of environmental justice and the current state of environmental justice issues faced by UC Davis students. It also sought out student opinions on the issues and what they believe can be done to solve them.
RDC released this survey between May 3, 2022 - June 2, 2022 and gathered a total number of 252 participants during that time period. Here are the key findings:
- There is an apparent lack of awareness and confusion among the response pool about resources at UC Davis that can help address environmental justice issues.
- Environmental justice issues that UC Davis students are most interested in seeing addressed are those related to food insecurity, commute safety, and housing quality.
- Respondents self-identifying as Black or African American were the highest proportion of students who reported facing poor housing quality more frequently.
The RDC recommended in their report that EPPC should work on (1) increasing fundraising efforts to improve housing affordability, purchase air filters, improve sanitary water stations on campus, etc. and (2) integrate environmental justice education in coursework.
